Thanks to Facebook, we’re all friends, or a firend of a friend, etc. And now there’s data to back that up.
Making news today: Facebook Claims 4.74 Degrees of Kevin Bacon.
In other words– there’s no long six degrees of separation between me and anyone else. Now there’s just a little less than five. As a journalist, I’ve noticed this to be true. I’ve had to make fewer phone calls to get to the person I’m looking for. Spokespeople seem to respond faster (most of them). And sometimes all I have to do is mention what I’m doing and people come to me.
What do you think about this new revelation? Is it great? Or is it scary?
I’ll let you ponder these questions while watching this hilarious Kevin Bacon commercial (just my opinion)…

One of my favoriate places to shop (okay, one of my husband’s favorite places– but I think it’s awesome) is ThinkGeek. And this year they have interactive shirts. My favorites are the instruments: synthesizer (piano), drums, guitar.

Does having more Facebook “friends” make you more influential? Or should you start a Facebook Fan Page? For journalists, influence could be measured in number of “Subscribers.”

I’ve often wondered, why can’t my dad quit smoking? He’s a successful businessman that has built houses his whole life. He can build and sell beautiful homes, but can’t seem to knock down his smoking habit.
I was happy to hear this statistic by the CDC: 70 percent of smokers want to quit.
I wonder whether my dad would be included in that 70 percent. He’s struggled with smoking for as long as I remember. And even when he tries to quit, I’m not sure if he’s serious about it…
